Matau (Fish Hook)
The matau is the symbol of prosperity and navigation.  It has connection to the great Pacific navigator and discoverer Maui, who is said to have fished up Aotearoa with the aid of a matau fashioned from his grandmother’s magic jaw bone.

The original concept designs for the collection of Aotearoa icons comes from a design project that James was commissioned to undertake in collaboration with Ngati Whatua and Transit New Zealand in 2004 as part of the Saggitti junction motorway system redevelopment in Aucland. This is the first public showing of this collection of designs.
